The Hambone Speaks

Honestly, I can’t say that I was looking for a “sign from on high” as I carved up our Christmas ham for various sandwiches, breakfast casseroles, pasta salads, and whatever else ham is destined to become over a holiday weekend. Yet, I heard that hambone speak today and had to capture the sentiment. It didn’t literally speak out loud (‘cuz that would be totally weird, right?!). However, I was struck by the way the bone popped out when I cut it to make it fit into the crock pot. I was adding it to season and flavor the six-pound industrial-sized can of green beans I’d procured for Thanksgiving (but SOMEbody else wanted collard greens instead, so the green beans took a back seat until the next holiday…and here we are!). I digress…let’s get back to the hambone.

While sawing with that big ol’ serrated knife, I finally hit the bone. I knew the knife’s limitations and that it wouldn’t go through the bone, so I looked for the joint. I found it and wiggled against the knife until I heard a “pop!” When I saw the juicy marrow inside, Hebrews 4:12 popped into my head. I was like, “Wow Lord, I didn’t expect an object lesson from the kitchen today, but thank You!”

The Amplified Bible says it this way:

“For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

As we ruminate over 2022, we can see that we’ve done some significant work. God invites us to labor to enter into His rest. As we do so, we can expect His Word – like a two-edged sword – to “penetrate as far as the division…of both the joints and marrow.” This indicates that there’s more work to be done in each of His children. Will you yield and allow Him to bring forth His plans through you in 2023?

This scripture passage challenges me to “cease from my own works” (just like Proverbs 3:5-6 constantly reminds me to “lean not to my own understanding). I have been in “reflect-and-repent” mode as I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the MANY things God has brought me through this year. As that knife cut and divided the ham and the bone and the marrow, I was reminded that God’s Word is powerfully working to sever some things that don’t need to go into the new year with me.

My prayer is that we will allow His Word to perform its penetrating work in us starting now and continuing into the new year…all for HIS glory.

P.S. I know I need to add more veggies to my menus in 2023…it’s already on my list! LOL

Abundant blessings for a Merry CHRISTmas and a prosperous Happy New Year, Kayren 🙂

“9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Nailed It!!! 💅🏾🦋

I’m looking at this lovely butterfly all the time…so mesmerizing!
Kourtney’s nail genius on display!

After a few short months of being her client, I am certain that Kourtney KNOWS me – and this helps her deliver a prime customer service experience every time.

You KNOW your nail tech is a keeper when she:

  1. Guides you to a color combo that eases you into the neon you’ve been hesitant to try for 3 seasons but it still works in a professional corporate setting 🤓
  2. Deciphers your ambiguous ask for “blingalicious” 💎 and pulls it off without using your prime obsession: gold glitter topcoat
  3. Understands that your indecision between fill-in vs. gel polish vs. complete soak-off (so you can ambitiously do your own nails😯 with cheap polish from the drugstore😳…which will never happen because it takes more time than it’s worth and you get more product on your skin than on your nails🥴) is pure foolishness…and lets you run with that circular reasoning until you remember that your nail appointment is a valuable investment🎯 in your self-care and mental well-being 🥳 #SelfCareIsNOTselfish
  4. Patiently waits 🤐 until you realize (on your own) that you’re aggravated because you need the fill-in and cut-down within 3 weeks instead of trying to stretch it to 4 weeks (or beyond…#Guilty)
  5. Incorporates your child’s college colors (#AggiePride💙💛), your love of stickers, AND your business logo for transition, renewal, and rebirth in one fell swoop 🦋
  6. AND you BOTH laugh and cry🤣 in the same appointment because it’s a sistah chat, venting session, and therapy all rolled into one

At least that’s how it was for me! I left her chair with a song in my heart, ready to face the world again…with super-fabulous nails!

Thank you, Kourtney!💓🤗 Follow her on IG @huesovhazel to be dazzled by her creativity and artistry…

I hope you find great service that brings you similar nail joy…or book with Kourtney if you’re in the area – just don’t take MY appointment time, PLEEEEZE!😊😉

“6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.

7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;

8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”

Teaching My Mama to Text

My shadow while taking a pic of Mama – pretty cool, eh?

Q: Do you know the only thing funnier than me being a TechnoDino🦖 (my teenagers have iPhones, but I don’t)?

A: It’s me providing tech support for my parents when I visited them – and actually fixing their issues!🤣 LOL

My parents and I are Android users. Their new cell phones are nicer than mine – not jealous, I just know that (at least) 70% of the features will never be touched.💯 Seriously, the only reason Mama’s barely used flip phone got replaced was because it was misplaced…go figure (bless her heart)! This is the lady who referred to sending me an email (a decade ago) by saying, “I’m gonna type to you today if I get time, Kayren!”😳 Anyhoo…

Not only did I teach my Mama (#CutieAt74) to send her first text, but I also showed her how to download a photo to her Gallery (AND add it to a Contact – new or existing) and set an alarm for important reminders (like upcoming appointments). We set up a Gmail account so she can subscribe to my YouTube channel, and she took her first cell phone photo!🥳

She even did a video call with me – that was especially funny! She’s still getting used to swiping and touching the screen, but with a bit more use, I have full confidence that she’ll reach proficiency in no time.🤔😏😉

This is a lady who has a lifetime legacy of teaching – a former middle school (translation: combat zone) Teacher of the Year…my Mama is a real life, ol’ school, bona fide educator. She just has to overcome some tech phobias (like many of us at one point or another). But she finally faced some of her techno-apprehensions, and I’m really proud of her for it.💓

Sure, it took a bit of extra patience for this Life Transition Coach to hand-hold my Mama while demonstrating some new technology. However, in comparison to the innumerable times in my 4.5 decades that she’s extended an abundance of grace and patience to me, I’ve gotta say it was more than #WorthItAll. 😊🌻🤗

“Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.”

I’m Celebrating Thanksgiving BEFORE Christmas

I was blessed to visit my parents (who live in another state) this weekend – I’m super-grateful for the great time of fellowship we had with lots of laughs! I was really surprised that several homes already displayed full Christmas decorations.😯 What really got my attention was hearing “The Little Drummer Boy”🥁🎵 piped through one of the Rest Areas. I was like, “Did I miss the memo about being late for Christmas?🎄 Gee whiz, I thought I was early in my Thanksgiving preparations, but am I already behind?!”😳

Don’t get me wrong…I am 150% a Christmas fan – I LOVE to celebrate the miracle of the birth of Christ EVERY DAY🎉 (and my daughter’s been able to pull me into watching Christmas movies at any time of the year LOL).🎁

Yet, I’m being VERY intentional to make SURE I give thanks (and not just one one day!) for ALL the marvelous things God has done in MY life over the past year. Truthfully, I am incorporating an “attitude of gratitude” into my daily reflections and meditations, and finding an exponential improvement in my quality of life with this adjustment!🙌🏽 I invite you to join me in celebrating the season of Thanksgiving BEFORE we get swept away by the festivities of Christmas (as it’s been hyper-commercialized). I’d love to hear how YOU are celebrating this season of Thanksgiving…drop me a comment!😇

Praying we focus on the reason for EVERY season…🙏🏼

Abundant blessings, Kayren💓

“7 That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.

8 Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth.”

(Psalm 26:7-8)

“I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.”

My Best Use for a Stick of Butter…

…all week long – hands down!!! LOL🤣 Look at this absolutely glorious apple crisp, smell the cinnamon wafting through the air, taste that brown sugar…yes, Fall is officially HERE!🍁🍂

Granted, I’ll admit this is a deconstruction of my sugar-free oatmeal breakfast earlier this week, but I figured that this Thursday night deserved a treat like apple crisp, so I went for it! Sooo glad I did…dessert perfection!😋 #NoRegrets #UNapologetic #JudgmentFreeZone #BakedInJoy #AppleEqualsFruit 🍎

Hubby & I polished off 1/3 of this while still hot outta the oven😋…2 years till empty nest…but who’s counting?😯🤔😏 Ha ha ha!

Happy Fri-YAY, y’all!!!😊🥳

Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings.”
